84 soldiers, most of them from Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt, have been sent to the district of Görlitz to lend a helping hand for the next four weeks.

The German armed forces were called to help in the five hospitals throughout the district of Görlitz – with emergency paramedics, nurses and medical assistants in Görlitz, Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, Zittau and Weißwasser. The soldiers are here until December 9th.

The district of Görlitz has been hard hit by the “second wave” of the Corona virus and has become a hotspot. As of November 20th, 2020 there are 1,994 infected persons in the district, making the seven-day incidence 284.10 per 100,000, the 13th highest seven-day incidence in Germany.

Hospitals and care facilities are struggling to keep up with the numbers as they reach their capacity in terms of not only beds but workers. Patient-care for the corona virus is labor intensive and requires a higher ratio of staff to patients. The district has 28 intensive care beds for corona patients and 24 of them are occupied. 14 of these beds have ventilators.
